How to Renew Your Residence Permit in Germany Faster
“Renewing my residence permit was so easy and fast.” -said no foreigner ever.
If you’re searching for how to renew a residence permit in Germany, you already know how stressful the process can be. Long waiting times, confusing requirements, and endless appointments at the Ausländerbehörde.
I’ve been through it myself.
The good news: with the right preparation, you can avoid delays and make the residence permit renewal process much smoother.
This guide shares practical tips to help you renew your German residence permit faster and with less stress.
Prepare the required documents early
One of the biggest mistakes people make when renewing a residence permit in Germany is waiting until they get an appointment to prepare documents.
This often causes delays because some documents take weeks to obtain.
So start as early as possible.
Common documents required for residence permit renewal in Germany:
Valid passport
Current residence permit
Proof of income, such as salary slips or an employment contract. Students may use a guarantor or a blocked bank account instead.
Proof of health insurance
Rental contract or registration certificate (Anmeldung)
Biometric photo
Completed application form, if available online
Always check your city’s official Ausländerbehörde website, as requirements can vary by location.
Expect long processing times, especially in big cities
If you live in a major city like Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg, expect longer processing times at the Ausländerbehörde.
Time is the biggest challenge when renewing a residence permit.
If you already know when your job starts, your studies begin, or your permit expires, start preparing immediately.
How to book an Ausländerbehörde appointment:
Google: “Ausländerbehörde Termin in [your city]”
Go to the official website
Select “Termin vereinbaren”
Ideally, apply for a residence permit renewal around four weeks before your permit expires.
If your permit is about to expire or has already expired, you can usually request an urgent appointment.
Upload your documents and clearly explain your situation in the message box.
Booking an appointment at the Ausländerbehörde
In most German cities, residence permit appointments are only available online.
When booking your appointment:
Select the correct appointment type, such as residence permit renewal for § 16b, § 18g etc.
Choose the correct permit category or paragraph number. Selecting the wrong option can lead to rejection or delays
Once your documents are reviewed, you’ll typically receive an email with your appointment date.
What to expect on the appointment day?
On the day of your Ausländerbehörde appointment:
Arrive at least 15 minutes early
Bring all documents, both originals and copies
Bring recent bank statements (Kontoauszüge), even if not explicitly requested
After your interview, you’ll receive a white payment card with your details. You’ll be directed to a payment machine inside the building.
Most Ausländerbehörden only accept Girocard (EC-Karte). Visa and Mastercard are sometimes not accepted, so always bring your Girocard. Cash is not accepted!
Also, from July 2025, biometric photos must be provided in QR code format.
If you do not have this, you can usually get it in the building, but only in exchange for 6 euros only in cash. So bring both some cash and a card just in case!
Missing documents or payment issues can result in delays or a new appointment.
Which residence permit will you receive?
After renewing your residence permit in Germany, you may receive one of the following:
New residence permit card: Usually ready within a month after the appointment. You’ll need to pick it up from the Ausländerbehörde yourself.
Residence permit sticker in your passport: is a cheaper option. However, a permit card is more practical, as it can be used as ID without carrying your passport everywhere.
Fiktionsbescheinigung: A temporary document issued if additional documents are needed or if you must travel urgently. It provides the same rights as your residence permit for a limited time.
Appointment confirmation letter: If another appointment is required, you may receive a confirmation letter. This allows you to legally stay in Germany, but you cannot travel with it.
